Properties

The Mine au Breton Historical Society owns and maintains several historic properties in Potosi.

Austin-Milam-Lucas Store
1799

Contained in the walls of part of the lower level are the original logs of Moses Austin’s cabin built in 1799. This log cabin served as a store and the first Potosi (Mine Au Breton) Post Office. The building currently houses The Historical Societies collections of mining tools, rocks and minerals, a library, a Veterans Gallery, a Picture Gallery, and the Gallery of Washington County Notables. The Austin-Milam-Lucas Store is located in the Historical Societies Heritage Park on Jefferson Street (Bearfoot).

Long-Banta Home
1865

One of the best examples of Victorian architecture in the area. This house was owned by three successive generations of the James Long family before its donation to the Historical Society. It served as the home of Parke M. Banta, US Representative and the first General Counsel for the Department of Health Education and Welfare during the Eisenhower Administration. The Long-Banta home is regularly visited by the Paranormal Task Force seeking if any spirits, ghosts, hauntings, etc are present.

Old Presbyterian Church Museum
1832-33

This is the oldest surviving Presbyterian Church building west of the Mississippi River. The building served as a house of worship until 1907 when the new church was built one block East on Breton Street. This building has had many uses after the congregation moved. It was used as a Silent Movie theatre, the Boy Scout Meeting Hall, a gymnasium for basketball, the temporary County Library, and the first Christian Bookstore. It was first converted to use as a museum during the Potosi Bicentennial in 1963. The building still serves as one of the Historical Society museums.
Next to the church, in the Old City Cemetery, is the tomb of Moses Austin and his wife Maria Browne Austin.

Old Perry, Dunklin, McGready, Cemetery

Located on South Water Street. The oldest cemetery in Potosi. Family plot for the members of the Perry, Dunklin, and McGready families. Site of the grave of John Perry, Potosi pioneer, merchant, and Revolutionary War Veteran. Located on South Water Street and Jefferson Street.

Casey Cabin
circa 1805

The Casey Cabin was first built by Samuel Silvers owner of the property located on Lick Skillet Road North of Potosi.
Andrew Casey bought the property in 1819. He and his descendants added on to the cabin multiple times as his family grew.
The Casey family donated the cabin to the Mine-au-Breton Historical Society in 2002, and the cabin was moved to the Heritage Park, in Potosi, by the Mine-au-Breton Historical Society.
It was finished and dedicated on May 13, 2017.
